Here are some of our favorite things to do on the island.
Wise Guys - One of the first places we tried on HHI. Part of the reason we fell in love with this island. A great menu and wine list. Its a little dressy and may not be perfect for little kids, but adults and teenagers should find plenty to enjoy here. We loved: Warm Crab Dip, Braised Bacon Steak and Pork Chop Vesuvio.
Loggerhead Landing - While technically part of the Marriott Grande Ocean, it is open to the public. Decent bar food and the location can't be beat since it is right at the Alder Lane Beach Access. Be careful though, due to their proximity to the beach and the rules about turtle safety, their kitchen closes promptly at 6:45pm. They frequently have live music and while the bar closes at 7:30 their bartenders can't be beat. Try their (fresh-squeezed) Moscow Mule or the Island Tonic.
Poseidon - Part of the same group as Wise Guys (above) this seafood restaurant has amazing food and multiple bars. Located in Shelter cove, a great shopping area and near the harbor. We loved: sushi, Fried Green Tomato Caprese, Seared Scallops.
Kilwins - If you're in the mood for ice cream or handmade candies, Kilwin's is the place for you. Located in Shelter Cove (near Poseidon, above), Kilwins handmade waffle cones will hit the spot any time of year. We like: the fudge, Blue Moon, Sea-Salt Chocolate Caramel, Raspberry Sorbetto (get it with a 2nd scoop of the Lemon Sorbetto).
Duck Donuts - This chain began just a little north of here on the Outer Banks of NC. Every donut is made to order right in front of you with all toppings added by hand to your specifications. Take the kids (or the young at heart) and let them build their perfect donut or donuts. We like: Maple Bacon, Sunrise (lemon icing w/raspberry drizzle), anything with chocolate.
Purple Cow Donuts - Baked to order donuts - Yes, BAKED - be sure to order the night before to ensure they have your choice ready. But you can pick your arrival time so you can sleep in and still enjoy a hot, fresh, donut. Closed - Sundays and Mondays.
Carolina Tasting Room - Looking for great local wines but want to make sure you'll like the one you get? Then this place is for you! Conveniently located in Coligny Plaza (in case you need to walk home), they offer 6 tastings for $3, to go cups of wine, and wine smoothies. We like: anything from Biltmore, Sea Island Wine-Dry White.
Java Burrito - Think of this as the love child of Chipotle and Starbucks. Some of the best burritos around and a full coffee bar with your choice of drinks. Try the braised beef and add some fries inside your burrito for a different touch. They also do bowls (salads), tacos and quesadillas. They are located just past the circle.
Slapfish - Fresh fish and most items prepared in house. Everything from Lobster roll to Poke bowls, Slapfish is a must try for fast casual service. We loved their Poke and the salmon salad as well as the fresh house-made pickles. They are on William Hilton Parkway a short distance from the circle.

Open sunrise to sunset the park is a great place to do something other than the beach.
